Are vitamins and minerals necessary? If vitamins and minerals aren’t necessary why do so many manufacturers put them in our foods; especially vitamin A, B, C, D and the minerals calcium, magnesium, copper and iron?   While not everyone needs all vitamin supplements, it has been shown that people over age 50 should consume vitamin B12 for energy production, immune function and iron absorption. Older adults as well as people with dark skin and anyone who get insufficient exposure to sunlight should consume extra vitamin D daily for immune function.  Women who are post menopausal should also take additional calcium, magnesium, vitamin C & D to help prevent osteoporosis & osteopenia according to doctors who deal with Osteoporosis.
