9th Sep 2020

Many Americans are now finding themselves stuck at home for an extended period of time. Over the next several weeks, you are going to find yourself getting to know your house very well. You will also burn through Netflix series like nobody’s business.

If you are like most people, you will eat your fair share of tomato soup, hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches. You will even finally fix that bathroom faucet that has been leaking since 2014. In fact, you are discovering that you will do just about anything to stave off boredom.

You are so desperate, you are even considering dusting off the exercise bike and giving it a good workout.

Being stuck at home means that you will eventually find yourself bored, if you haven’t already. It will be a struggle to find things to do to keep your body and mind occupied. And when boredom does set in, your mood will sour for sure.

Learn a New Skill

There are plenty of skills you could learn that would help you get that big raise, that promotion or even help land your dream job. There is also technology that you could better understand that would help your professional goals.

Since you are stuck at home anyway, take the time to utilize the internet and teach yourself a skill or two. There are plenty of sources including videos, ebooks and online forums.

Read a Book

We get it. It is far too tempting to just flop on the couch and watch television with a death grip on the remote. But that is hardly productive. Besides, you will eventually grow bored doing that as well.

We think you should resist the urge to “Netflix and chill” and read a book instead. There are probably several books you would like to read. Start off with a list of books you want to read and get going on reaching that goal.

Go Through Your Bills

You can’t recall the last time you actually read your cable or cell phone bill. That’s not unusual, many of us are in the same boat. Since you are stuck at home and have the time, read through all of your bills to see what you are actually paying for. You might be surprised at what you find.

For example, you might discover that you have been paying for a service you have not utilized in years. Like paying for a cable box in a room that doesn't even have a television. It happens. Or you could find out that you are paying for 20 gigs of data on your cell phone plan yet you have never gone over 3 gigs of data on any given month.

So go save some money.

Hone Your Cooking Skills

Maybe you have some cooking skills, perhaps you can’t even make a grilled cheese sandwich without burning it, either way, it wouldn't hurt to hone your cooking skills.

Like millions of Americans, you may find yourself in a dinner rut. You tend to serve the same dishes week in and week out. For example, you make your famous tuna casserole every Wednesday, which is why family members disappear at dinnertime.

The internet is full of all sorts of recipes. It is about time to get out of that dinner rut and try out some new dishes. Swap out that Wednesday casserole with chicken cacciatore or spinach enchiladas.

Make Meals in Advance

The last thing you want to do after a long and hectic day at work is to come home and have to prepare dinner. Take advantage of this downtime and prepare a bunch of dishes in advance. There are several dishes you can make and freeze including casseroles, stews and soups.

When everything gets back to normal, you have several dishes tucked away in your freezer ready to go when you need them.

Spend Quality Time with the Family

Your spouse and your kids are stuck at home with you. This gives you the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with them. There are many activities you can engage in including playing board games, reading books or just sitting around and chatting.

Work Out

You aren’t doing your body or mind any good if you spend hours on end watching television. At least at work, you get up and walk to the restroom or cafeteria. Get up off of that couch and mix in a few jumping jacks, push-ups and squats. You can even do some stair sprints.

Not only will exercise help with your boredom, but you will also feel better for doing it.
